Completionist Ep. 1 - Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (I Should Be Studying)

"Far Cry® 3: Blood Dragon is THE Kick-Ass Cyber Shooter.

Welcome to an 80’s vision of the future. The year is 2007 and you are Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando. Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world.

Experience every cliché of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy Seals) collide."  - Steam description of FC3:BD.

Post-apocalyptic. Post-nuclear War. Lasers. Dragons. Mutant (Ninja) Turtles. Blood. Kick-Ass Cliche Catchphrases. What more do you need?

One of my more recent purchases (like, bought it 4 days ago), I've 100%-ed this game in just under 12 hours...playing slowly.

Granted, it is a cheapy game (around $15) so it's to be expected to be short. What was really unexpected was how much fun this game really was for such a short affair. The amount of times I laughed at the crude humour, the satirical 80's jokes and in-game dialogue was unprecedented. I loved this game to its core. And it has its share of achievements which I can thoroughly appreciate. Thought I'd compile a list of em and quick descriptions on how to get them easily. So here we go.

Story Based Achievements

Welcome to the party, pal - Pretty much completing the opening scene will nab you this achievement. Not too difficult.

Blood Dragon Down and One Small Step - These next two achievements come from the second story based mission and are a piece of cake. You're pretty much still in tutorial mode at this point and get walked through the whole ordeal.

End Game - Do I really need to explain this one? Really?

Collectibles

The best way to find all of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon's collectibles is to just explore the four quadrants of the island you're on and take control of a garrison here or there. This will unlock the map data for you in the vending machines you purchase ammo, weapons and consumables from. At $500 a pop, and only four in total, $2000 is a small price to pay to have all these items marked on your map. Plus you make more than that amount back finding these items (they reward you with CP and $$$). Also, you need to find all the collectibles to unlock some attachments for your weapons.

What are You Reading For? - Dr Carlyle's notes provide an interesting read...if you can find them all. There's 10 in total and most are hidden in hard to spot caves around the island. Oftentimes, you'll have to crawl to find them. When hunting them down from your map, be sure to look for cave entrances first. Some notes are easier to find, just lying out in the open on the plains.

The Drug of the Nation - TV sets. That's what these are. You'll typically find them in the ancient ruins scattered across the island. If it looks ancient and crumbling and you haven't been there before, chances are you'll find one of these TV sets there. They can also be hidden with Dr. Carlyle's notes in underground caves. There are a total of 32 of these things.

The Greatest Format of all Time - Anybody remember VHS tapes? Those old school things that we used to watch movies on? There are 10 found throughout the island, situated in small, shielded outposts where you may have to challenge a few Omega Force Soldiers to get to them. Make sure you read their descriptions, those movies are quite amusing.

Side Missions

Way to Go, Garri-Son - While technically not a side mission, you cannot unlock the side missions without first capturing the Garrisons. From memory, there are 13 Garrisons altogether and it's relatively simple to capture them. There are a couple of options to take: storm the Garrison and kill everyone singlehanded, stealthily scope the place out, deactivate the alarms to prevent reinforcements from appearing and then kill everyone off, or find the MegaShield switch, deactivate that which will cause a Blood Dragon to come into the base and tear shit up. Personally, I preferred the third option. Once everyone is dead, you can throw a cyber-heart outside to lure the dragon out and put the shields back online...or you could kill the dragon. Kill the dragon. You get a crap tonne of CP and it also helps with the Dragon Slayer achievement (discussed below). Every Garrison you capture will give you either one Predator's Path Side Quest or one Hostage Situation Side Quest, or one of each.

Nice Like Jesus - Involves saving a scientist captured by a troop of Omega Force. The only real tip I can give here is stealth. Scope everything out to make sure you know where every soldier is before attacking. Use stealth kills; takedowns and the bow. If you're spotted by any soldier, the scientist will be shot and killed before you can save him. It may also be worthwhile leveling up to unlock the heavy takedown skill as there will be heavies on some of these missions.

Kill Them All - Most of the time you'll be hunting a certain "rare" animal of the species found on the island. Use cyber-vision to spot the "rare" animal as most of the time there will be multiple animals of the species in the area you're looking through. Other times, you'll be hunting an Omega Force Soldier who's ticked someone off. No stealth is required, but if that's your thing by all means, go ahead. Also, MAKE SURE YOU USE THE PROVIDED WEAPON. Failure to do so will result in mission failure.

Murder Nature - Kill the 12 different animal types on the island. There's actually more than 12 but only 12 killable types. You'll find you complete most of these through the Predator's Path missions but there are a couple of animals you don't get through them. You encounter Cyber-Dogs through the main story missions while the other animals include goats and buffalo/bison as well as the Neon Snake and I think the Cyber Panther. Goats and Bison are found in abundance across the entire island, plus your map will tell you general areas to find them. An arrow is usually enough to kill them. The map is also useful for finding Cyber-Panthers  which are easy enough to kill. If they come after you just swing with your knife until they die. Neon Snakes are a lot harder to find even though they glow bright blue. I found the best area to find them was in the tall grass along the coastlines (the grass that completely covers you when crouched) or in the rocky outcrops between the two north western Garrisons. You need to kill all 12 types to unlock all the special ammos (Explosive, Laser and Incendiary).

Completing all the side quests (and collectibles) will unlock all the attachments for your guns.

Blood Dragon Related

Dragon Slayer - Easy enough to do. Just kill 25. There are a number of dragons to kill during main missions (about 7) as well as one in a Predator's Path side mission and if you use them to flush out Garrisons before you kill them that adds another 13. That puts you at about 21 dragons leaving a measly 4 to kill in open world play. Easy enough. And why wouldn't you? They level you up really quickly as they give 5000CP for each kill. I found that the easiest way to kill them was by using the Terror 4000, an upgraded Shotgun or the Killstar and hitting them in the weak point on their chest. Crouch while fighting them and get in close, that way if they rear up to swipe at you you're aim automatically hits them straight in the soft spot dealing massive damage. Grenades and C400 work well too.

Just the Tip - You don't have to kill the Dragon using only the bow. That would take about 3 hours and 5346 arrows. No, just weaken it with any weapon of your choosing until it's health bar is barely visible. Then pepper the blood blister with arrows. Piece of cake.

Set Them Free - Braincages control the dragons so they won't attack Omega Force soldiers or chase after cyber-hearts. You can try sneaking up on them and shooting the braincage in the giant red button at the back but that's just too hard. Take the simple man's approach and lob a grenade into its face. That'll drop the cage quick, smart and in a hurry. You'll fight about 6 dragons during story missions with braincages and there are a few defending Garrisons so you'll have ample opportunity to destroy them.

Running man - Just make a Blood Dragon go red and then back to green. Shoot it. Hide behind cover, cars, rocks, whatever you can find. Throw a cyber-heart to distract it and leave. It'll work all the time.

The Other Achievements

Derp - Find a REALLY big drop. And jump. There may be one in the story missions but I'd already gotten this by then so I'm not 100% sure. I just went to one of the two North Western Garrisons (I think) which had a balcony out the back overlooking the sea. Ahhhh, pretty. Then I jumped. Plop into the water and unlocked it.

Hail to the King - Just level up. Complete missions and side missions. Collect all the collectibles. Kill a lot of soldiers. And kill a lot of dragons, dragons by far level you up the fastest. There's only 30 levels and I was level 30 before I'd completed the 3rd mission.

Tooled Up - Complete all the side quests and find all the collectibles to unlock all weapons attachments. Then get lots of money to buy them. There are 8 weapons along with explosives that you can equip (A.J.M. 9, Fazertron, Kobracon, Galleria 1991, Bow, Terror 4000, Flamer and Killstar). Only the first four have upgrades. All the A.J.M. 9's upgrades will set you back $5100, the Fazertron $11850, the Kobracon $12950 and the Galleria 1991 $13250.

In total, save up $43150.

The Only True Stopper - Headshot every type of enemy. There's a lot of debate about this one. Some people say you can't complete this before the last mission as one type of enemy is in the last mission. I, however, got this in the second to last mission so...they're all wrong =P

You need to headshot every HUMAN enemy. So that means:
Rifleman Foot Soldier - Marked by two down arrows in cyber-vision
Close Range Foot Soldier - Marked by a lightning bolt in cyber-vision
Sniper - Marked by a cross hair in cyber-vision
Heavy Elite Soldier - These are the ones that carry the minigun and flamethrower. Headshot one of each just to be sure. Marked by the shield in cyber-vision
Dead Runner and Dead Rifleman - Dunno what they're marked as in cyber-vision, never had a chance to use it. There's plenty in one of the story missions so you won't miss that opportunity.

So there you have it. My guide to 100%-ing Blood Dragon.
